DEEP SEA FISHING WITH KIDS: WHAT THEY’LL LOVE (AND WHAT TO PREPARE FOR)

Picture this: your kid’s eyes go wide as the Galveston shoreline shrinks behind you. The Gulf of Mexico opens up in every direction, and somewhere below the surface, something big is waiting. There’s nothing quite like a child’s first deep sea fishing trip — the smell of salt air, the hum of the engine, the electric moment a rod bends for the first time.

But as a parent, you probably have questions before you book. How young is too young? What if they get seasick? Will they actually have fun — or spend four hours bored, whining and sunburned? These are fair questions, and you deserve honest answers.

At Up Above Adventures, we’ve taken families of all ages offshore. This guide covers everything you need to know to set your family up for an incredible day on the Gulf — including the stuff most charter websites won’t tell you.

IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE FOR DEEP SEA FISHING?

Here’s something that surprises a lot of parents: Up Above Adventures has no minimum age requirement. That said, age isn’t really the right question. Readiness is. A mature, outdoorsy 5-year-old may have the time of their life. A restless 9-year-old who hates sitting still might struggle.

The better questions to ask yourself are:

  • Can they stay patient and entertained for a few hours at a stretch?
  • Are they genuinely excited about fishing, or is this your idea?
  • Have they ever been on a boat before, even a small one?
  • How do they handle heat, sun and being away from home comforts?

If the answers are mostly positive, they’re ready. And if you’re unsure, consider starting with a shorter inshore or jetty trip first. They’re a great way to test the waters (literally) before heading offshore.

WHAT KIDS WILL ABSOLUTELY LOVE

Let’s start with the good stuff, because there’s a lot of it.

THE RIDE OUT

Most kids are immediately captivated by the boat ride offshore. The speed, the spray, watching the coastline disappear — it feels like an adventure before a single line is in the water. Got Her Hooked cruises at 35 knots, fast enough that the ride itself is half the adventure. Many kids say this is one of their favorite parts of the whole day.

BEING PART OF THE CREW

Kids don’t just want to watch, they want to do. Our crew will involve them: showing them how to hold the rod, explaining the fish finder and sonar, letting them bait a hook. Give a kid a role and they become invested in a whole new way. Some of our youngest anglers are the most focused people on the boat.

THAT FIRST BEND IN THE ROD

No matter how many times you’ve seen it, there’s nothing like the look on a kid’s face when a fish hits their line. Even a modest catch feels enormous to a child. That photo — grinning ear to ear, holding up their catch with both hands — is the one that ends up on the fridge.

THE WILDLIFE

Dolphins riding the bow wake. Flying fish skipping across the surface. Diving birds marking a school of baitfish below. The Gulf of Mexico is alive in ways kids simply don’t expect, and those moments — completely separate from fishing — are ones they’ll talk about for years.

WHAT TO PREPARE FOR (THE HONEST PART)

A great trip doesn’t mean a perfect trip. Here’s what to realistically expect so nothing catches you off guard.

SEASICKNESS

Children aged 2–12 are among the most susceptible to motion sickness, but many kids actually handle the ocean better than their parents. The key is prevention, not reaction. By the time your child feels sick, it’s already hard to reverse. Tackle it the night before, not the morning of (more in the seasickness section below).

SLOW STRETCHES

Fishing involves waiting. Even on active days, there are quiet stretches between bites. Younger kids can lose focus during these windows, which is completely normal. Come prepared (see our packing tips below) and set expectations early: “We might wait a while, but when that rod goes down, you’re the one reeling it in.”

GULF SUN AND HEAT

The Gulf sun is relentless, especially in summer. Kids burn faster than adults and often don’t notice until it’s too late. Sunscreen needs to be applied before boarding and reapplied every two hours, but getting a kid to stand still for sunscreen on a moving boat is its own challenge. UV-protective clothing is often the smarter solution (more below). Luckily, on Got Her Hooked, our air conditioned salon is always there when the heat gets to be too much.

BIG FISH = HARD FIGHT

The Gulf is home to powerful fish. Amberjack, tuna and wahoo don’t give up easily. Smaller kids may need crew assistance to reel in larger species, which is totally fine and actually makes it more fun. They still get full credit for the catch.

WHY GOT HER HOOKED IS A GREAT BOAT FOR FAMILIES

A lot of the anxiety parents feel about taking kids deep sea fishing disappears when you see what Got Her Hooked actually looks like on the inside. This isn’t a bare-bones fishing skiff; it’s a 56-foot Viking luxury sport fishing yacht built for comfort as much as for fishing.

  • A/C throughout: The salon and flybridge are fully air-conditioned, offering a genuine cool-down and recovery option, not just shade.
  • Two full bathrooms with showers: For families with young kids, this alone is a game-changer.
  • Full galley kitchen: Microwave, stove, oven, fridge, freezer and ice maker on board. Add the chef package for fully prepared meals.
  • Sleeping cabins: Three staterooms, five beds (1 queen, 2 full, 2 twins) means that on overnight charters, kids sleep in real beds.
  • Starlink Wi-Fi and live TV: Available 24/7. A nice safety net for longer trips when kids need a screen break.
  • Fish cleaning and filleting included: The crew handles it, so kids go home with clean fillets ready to cook.
  • Up to 4 crew on board: There’s always someone to help a kid bait a hook or fight a fish.
  • Size and stability: At 56 feet and nearly 39 tons, Got Her Hooked handles Gulf chop better than smaller vessels.

SEASICKNESS: HOW TO PREVENT IT BEFORE IT RUINS THE DAY

Seasickness is the number one reason a kids’ fishing trip (and an adult’s!) goes sideways. At Up Above Adventures, our guests have the option to relax and recuperate in the air-conditioned salon. However, the ideal option is avoiding seasickness altogether. Here’s how to stay ahead of it:

  • Medicate the night before, not the morning of. Dramamine Kids chewables or similar over-the-counter remedies work best when taken 8–12 hours before departure. Read the label carefully for correct dosages by weight.
  • Try Sea-Bands. These acupressure wristbands are drug-free, work well for many kids, and are easy to pack as a backup. Great for kids who can’t take medication.
  • Watch what they eat beforehand. Stick to bland, easy foods: cereal, toast, bananas, apples. Avoid greasy, heavy or acidic foods the morning of the trip.
  • Pack ginger candies or ginger chews. Research supports ginger as effective against motion sickness, and most kids actually enjoy the taste.
  • Stay above deck and keep eyes on the horizon. Looking down at a phone, book or tablet below deck is one of the fastest ways to feel sick.
  • Tuck a small zip-lock bag in their pocket. Just in case. Experienced charter parents know.

WHAT TO PACK FOR KIDS ON A DEEP SEA CHARTER

Beyond the obvious sunscreen and snacks, here’s what separates a prepared parent from a stressed one:

SUN & HEAT ESSENTIALS

  • UV-protective long-sleeve shirts: It’s far easier than chasing a squirmy kid with sunscreen on a moving boat.
  • Buff or sun gaiter: These protect the back of the neck, a spot that often gets the most sun when your face is pointed down at the water.
  • Polarized sunglasses (kids’ fit): Protects eyes and helps with spotting fish
  • Small personal misting fan: The Gulf in summer is brutal during slow stretches
  • Cooling towels: Compact, cheap, and kids love them. Pack one for yourself while you’re at it!

SEASICKNESS KIT

  • Dramamine Kids chewables (taken the night before)
  • Sea-Bands (acupressure wristbands) as a drug-free backup
  • Ginger chews or ginger candy
  • Small zip-lock bag — just in case

The Less Obvious Stuff (That Makes a Big Difference)

  • Waterproof disposable camera: Giving kids their own camera completely changes their engagement with the trip. They become the documentarians. It’s one of the best investments you can make for a day on the water.
  • Small waterproof notebook to log their catches: Species, estimated size, time of day. Kids who track their catches stay focused and feel a real sense of accomplishment even on slower days.
  • Underwater fish ID cards: Laminated, waterproof Gulf species cards. Kids love knowing exactly what they just pulled up.
  • Baby wipes: For bait hands, fish smell, sunscreen reapplication, and a hundred other things you’ll be grateful for.
  • Light hoodie (even in summer): Air conditioning below deck plus wind on the ride out and back can surprise you.
  • Non-slip boat shoes instead of flip flops: Wet decks are slippery and flip flops go overboard.
  •  Ziplock bags: For wet clothes, extra snacks, and protecting your phone.
  • Headphones and a downloaded playlist or audiobook: For the long ride out to the fishing grounds, not during the action.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TRIP FOR YOUR FAMILY

Up Above Adventures offers a range of charter options on Got Her Hooked, and choosing the right one makes a big difference for families.

  • The 12-hour deep sea charter: For most families, this is the sweet spot. A full day offshore gives you real deep sea fishing time without the commitment of an overnight trip. With A/C, full bathrooms, and a complete galley on board, a 12-hour day is comfortable and manageable even for younger kids.
  • Overnight charters (36 or 48 hours): For older kids who are into fishing and up for a real adventure, an overnight trip takes it to another level entirely. Got Her Hooked’s three staterooms and five beds mean everyone sleeps in comfort. These are bucket-list trips for fishing-obsessed families.
  • Every charter is private: Got Her Hooked is exclusively yours for the duration of the trip — up to 6 guests, with the captain and crew. No strangers, no competing for rods, no adjusting pace for anyone but your family.
  • Species kids get most excited about: Red snapper, mahi-mahi, and smaller reef fish tend to be the crowd-pleasers — colorful, active on the line, and manageable enough for kids to fight themselves with a little crew help.

THE MEMORY IS WORTH THE PREPARATION

Here’s the truth: no amount of preparation guarantees a perfect day. Fish don’t always cooperate. Kids get tired. Someone might feel queasy. But even an imperfect day offshore — the salt air, the open water, the crew, the boat — has a way of becoming a story your family tells for years.

That photo of your kid grinning over their first red snapper, arms barely long enough to hold it up? That’s the one that ends up framed. We’ve seen it happen more times than we can count.

Don’t overthink it. Pack smart, prepare for the waves, and let the Gulf do the rest.
