Why Target Wahoo?

The wahoo stands as the pinnacle of pelagic predators, renowned not just for its speed, which exceeds 60 mph, but also for its strength and agility. This torpedo-like carnivore, the most formidable member of the mackerel family, showcases a combination of aggression, fierceness, and relentless pursuit that will challenge and thrill any angler.

With sleek, streamlined bodies marked by vibrant blue stripes against a silver backdrop, wahoo are not only powerful but also strikingly beautiful. Typically encountered in the 22 to 55-pound range, these fish can grow up to 220 pounds, although such giants are rare. They cruise the open ocean’s blue currents, preferring temperatures between 75 and 86˚F, and often venture close to islands and reef pinnacles in their quest for prey.

Our captains and crew are seasoned veterans in the art of wahoo fishing, equipped with tournament-class gear and tactics honed through years of experience. We use state-of-the-art equipment designed to outpace and outsmart the fastest fish in the ocean.

Winter Wahoo Fishing in the Gulf

Winter wahoo fishing in the Gulf of Mexico typically starts in late November and extends through early March. During this time, the waters cool down, and wahoo migrate closer to the coastline in search of prey, making them more accessible to anglers. To maximize your chances of a successful fishing trip, it’s essential to plan your expedition during this window of opportunity.

Many anglers target wahoo around offshore oil rigs and drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. These structures create an artificial reef ecosystem that attracts baitfish and, subsequently, wahoo.

The Right Gear and Techniques

  • Rods and Reels: When targeting wahoo, it’s essential to use heavy-duty gear. A sturdy trolling rod paired with a high-capacity reel is a must. Spooled with a heavy monofilament or braided line, you’ll be ready to handle the speed and strength of these fish.
  • Lures and Bait: Wahoo are aggressive predators that respond well to lures mimicking the appearance and action of their natural prey. Popular choices include high-speed trolling lures like the “wahoo bomb” and jet-head lures. Live bait, such as small bonito or Spanish mackerel, can also be effective.
  • Trolling: Trolling at high speeds (around 12-20 knots) is the preferred technique for wahoo fishing. Use outriggers to spread your lines and increase your chances of hooking into a wahoo.
  • Depth: Wahoo tend to occupy the upper layers of the water column. To increase your chances of success, target depths between 100 to 300 feet.

Frequently Asked Questions for Up Above Adventures

What should I bring?

We recommend bringing drinks, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, appropriate fishing attire, hats, boat shoes, beach and hand towels, sunglasses, and Ziplock bags if you plan to take fillets home with you.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, in Texas, anyone 17 years of age or older must possess a valid fishing license to legally fish in public waters. Various types of licenses are available depending on the target fish and fishing location. It’s crucial to know the regulations and obtain the correct license to ensure a safe and enjoyable fishing experience. Fishing licenses can be purchased at Wal-mart or Academy stores, or online at the Texas Parks and Wildlife website. If you’re a “Rider” on our charter and not actively fishing, this requirement doesn’t apply.

Are we guaranteed to catch fish?

While we can’t guarantee a catch due to the unpredictable nature of fishing, rest assured that our experienced captain and crew will exert every effort to ensure a successful outing. We have a strong track record, and if we’re not catching fish, it’s likely no one is. We prioritize honesty and strive to provide our customers with the best possible experience.

What and why should I tip the captain and crew?

While tipping is discretionary, our crew works for a daily wage and tips, similar to waiters and waitresses. It’s customary to tip the crew 20% for excellent service. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and helps support our hardworking crew members.
